Go to your county courthouse's assessment office. They have computers there available for free to the public. You can see who owns it, the previous owners, purchase dates, sale prices, fair market value, pictures, etc. There is tons of free information and you can do this for any property in the county with the address or owners name!

Sale of houses is usually a matter of public record. The county clerk or recorder of deeds should be able to give you that information.
Newspapers also often list the information in the "home" section.

Home sales are public records. Here in Illinois, there are websites that tell you the seller, buyer and how much the home sold for. So, i would say the internet. Your local public record office or gov. website.

You can search online, some websites will show you what houses sold for, so that you can find houses to compare yours with to know what value your home has in your area.

Ask the seller and be frank. You'd be surprised how ridiculously easy the real estate field is when you leave head with people and give them a strong benefit for helping you. When speaking with them, always place the focus on the benefit they're getting. They'll almost ALWAYS help you. Watch and you'll see.

In Canada, you can go to the planning department I think and look up information on properties, who owns it, etc. I think it also includes the price each time it sells but I am not 100%

In many states, it is public information. Contact your local circuit court, or you can go online and check on the real property database of that state using that specific address.
