At my old apartment I used to see tiny gray bugs that mainly gravitated around the top rim of my bathtub. They were half the size of a flea, medium gray in color, and did not appear to be able to jump or fly. They could run pretty quick, but it was easy enough to squash them with just 1 finger. I live in the South Jersey area if it matters. I've always been curious as to what these things are. I think I saw one on top of the toilet tank in my store recently, too. Any ideas?

My guess is that they might be springtails, more properly known as Collembolans. These are tiny, primitive almost-insects that move about by hopping using a springy fork on their abdomen that flicks against the ground. They can't jump like fleas, but kind of ping into the air a short distance.

They are harmless, generally feeding on mould and other growths in warm, humid areas of the house. I used to get bajillions of them hanging around an old loufa sponge on the back of the tub.

It is hard for me to know what kind of bug this is! I have never been to NJ and I do not think I've seen them in Ohio. Anyways, if you know enough about the physical appearance of the insect, you can look up an insect dichotomous key. You can follow the key based on the physical appearances and come down to the ordinal level. This may help you to narrow your search.
