I worked IT help desk at my university for three years and Dells were the most common laptop on campus by far. The cheap Dells are nothing but crap, stay away from them. The mid-range and high-end ones (Latitude, Precision, XPS) are obvuously better quality. If you buy a Dell, spend the extra cash for the 3 year on-site service contract. It's worth every cent. If you can, buy your Dell from the small business site, not the regular consumer site, as you'll almost always get tech support based out of Texas, not India.
If I was buying a first laptop for college, I'd buy an Apple MacBook or Apple MacBook Pro. With Apple you know you're getting top-quality hardware and support. You can get a MacBook or MacBook Pro with a 10% educational discount and get a free iPod nano through August. Or, get a refurb MacBook/MacBook Pro at a big discount from Apple's refurb store. As always, make sure you buy AppleCare for extended warranty coverage!

Last year I had 2 different ones for college.
1.) Dell - it sucked! When something goes wrong you have to call and tell them about it, they almost never speak English, and they always tell you to ship the computer back so they can look at it, then your left without a computer until they get it back to you.
2.) Toshiba - I actually loved this one! However, one night it started making this really weird noise, woke up the next morning and it had erased it's operational system. I called Toshiba and they said it was nothing I did, but that they do that sometimes. Most of my friends have them and have never had a problem so if you're willing to chance it, go for it.
3.) HP!!! Best one ever. That's what my mom has right now, and that's what I am going to be getting for school this year to replace the Toshiba.
Hope this helps. :-)

Dells are cheap, Lenovo and MacBook are the best build quality and reliability, but expensive. If you just need it for word processing and web surfing, don't pay for fancy features and performance - it's pretty unnecessary. Consider buying a budget, reliable laptop. MacBooks and ThinkPad's are reliable, but not exactly budget. I would suggest Dell Inspiron or Vostro (small business) series.
Here's a laptop buying guide for college-bound students that you might find helpful:
