This question has been asked before, but the answers were not very good.
We are the only animal that seems to need clothing. Maybe if we went naked, out skin and the souls of our feet would toughen up enough to allow us to go naked. Maybe clothes are not really needed. I would not want to run naked through the woods, but maybe I should try it. If you go barefoot, your feet do toughen up, don't they? Maybe clothes are just a custom and we could learn to live OK without them.

Please excuse the misspellings. Thanks.

So far, bad answers.

OK. Let me state it another way.
Why don't we have fur, like other mammals?

You people should not be allowed to vote. I was expecting better answers in a category supposedly devoted to science.

Not gonna forgive the misspelling. You have an opportunity to use spell check.

You question is way immature.

You have gotten plenty of good answers. It is obvious why the majority of humans HAVE to wear clothing.

With every day pass, our country is getting into more and more trouble. The inflation, unemployment and falling value of dollar are the main concern for our Government but authorities are just sleeping, they don’t want to face the fact. Media is also involve in it, they are force to stop showing the real economic situation to the people. I start getting more concern about my future as well as my family after watching the response of our Government for the people that affected by hurricane Katrina.

According to recent studies made by World Bank, the coming crisis will be far worse than initially predicted. So if you're already preparing for the crisis (or haven't started yet) make sure you watch this video at http://www.familysurvival.tv and discover the 4 BIG issues you'll have to deal with when the crisis hits, and how to solve them fast (before the disaster strikes your town!) without spending $1,000s on overrated items and useless survival books.

Humans are the only animal which has adapted to every climate on earth. We inhabit scorching hot desserts and hot humid swamp, as well as freezing wind swept desserts and frozen ocean ice. The only reason humans can survive this range of conditions is because we have created clothes which take the place of the adapted fur coats and cooling systems which animals evolved for these different conditions. Having once been established for survival, clothes became part of the various regional cultures. There are some limited conditions in which modern humans could survive without clothes, but we have relied upon them for so many generations that we are susceptible to both UV damage and frostbite, so in most climes we do need them, when not in one of our shelters.

For some reason a long time ago people started making and wearing clothing so our bodies adapted to that and consequently we don't have fur or thick skin to keep us warm in the cold. Theoretically we could walk around with no clothes as long as it's not too cold (and if it was legal of course). It wont be happening any time soon, nudity is still so taboo in society today. We created our need for clothing. It would take hundreds of years for us as a species to readapt to being naked all the time. Damn the first person who was ashamed of their body...

We need clothes because once upon a time, we were taught
to be self-conscious of our bodies, we were taught to feel shameful of nakedness. If it weren't so ashamed of being naked, then sex probably wouldn't be such a big deal either... it'd just be another part of common life, rather than something we do when we're sure no one's looking. We weren't born with clothes on, so it shouldn't be so taboo but... we live in a world where being naked is considered bad. It's stupid, but that's life these days.

Some clothes serve a physical function - protection from sun, cold, wind (and water loss), etc. Other clothes serve some sort of social function - covering body areas that society feels should not be displayed (and that varies beween societies, of course), or advertising status and availability, like birds' plumage. Still other clothes are just a reflection of fashion fads. I guess the core is we might 'need' some clothes, but most clothes are just artificial fur and feathers for us, since we don't have natural signalling devices other than expressions and scents.

well first of all, the first clothes (made around the Ice Age) were made of animal skin and were mainly needed to protect us from the cold. I don't know when but people suddenly needed them to protect their...private parts. As the Ice Age ended, people didn't need the fur coats anymore, because it was too warm to wear them. Either they were again naked for awhile and then decided they need to cover their private parts, or they had already decided. either way, they discovered fabric and built clothes. Nowadays, I don't really get why we need clothes. I guess it's just the way nature designed us. Evolution made our brains smarter so we would build artificial protection instead growing natural ones like fur.

We will be arrested if we don't wear clothes.
Every since Adam and Eve sinned against God in the Garden of Eden, we have covered ourselves.(Well most of us) Our brains have evolved us into intelligent beings that know clothes protect us.Maybe someone from a nudist colony can give a better answer.

we started wearing clothes, beacause as they say ' the naked apes'.
all the other animals have soem form of natural protective gear that protects them from the environmental heat, dirt etc.
but we dont. so we have come up this unique way of changing our protective gear according to our environment.
this has to be one of the reasons that humans are found all over the earth, unlike animals.
and ofcourse, as time passed, clothing became a symbol of civilization and class. we dress now not just because we need to but also for social reasons, to be civilized so to say.
