I am going to a party and Me and my Friend are going as hula girls. I have been looking for grass skirts in the party stores and they are all crappy looking and the cute ones have like a 28" waste, I need it a bit bigger so I can have it down on my hips. I know how I want it to look, but I just can't find one that I like. So, I decided I'm going to try and make my own. I'm pretty crafty so this should be fun, I just can't figure out a way to attach the raffia to some kind of a waste band (pefferably elastic). Any ideas anyone?

You can stitch the raffia to the elastic, or stitch it to fabric first and stitch that to the elastic.

When you start stitching it might be best to tie the raffia together in small bundles, so it will not get away, after the first row of stitching you might want to undo the ties so the raffia can be spread better and sew a second time.
Stitching can be done on hand or with a normal sewing machine

I would take the raffia more than twice as long as the skirt needs to be, fold it in the middle, sew, try on, and cut to length.

I wonder if stitching to the elastic is a good idea, as it is much harder to stitch too. If you decide to stitch to fabric and stitch that to elastic you can cover the fabric with a braid of raffia or with shells you stitch on.

If you can not get it to work, try to get three of the 28" skirts and cut on of them in half to add to the others.
