The Aztecs and Toltec had Quetzalcoatl a feathered serpent that flew. The carvings of Quetzalcoatl look remarkably like Asian dragons.

There are over 500 nations and tribes. They each have their own languages. Some few, such as the Nakota, Dakota, and Lakota share dialects, but they are exceptions. If I asked you for the European word for dragon, which language would you choose from? French? Italian? Greek? English? German? So which language are you asking about? There is no universal "native american" language. An Iroquois likely couldn't have understood an Apache, because they speak entirely different languages, just as an Englishman can't instantly understand a Chinese speaker. Next point, have you any evidence that such a creature existed in any Amerind culture? You can't have a word for a concept you don't have.

As the others have pointed out, there are many Native American tribes and languages and not many examples of dragons. However, in Mexico’s pre-Hispanic recollections there exists a mythical god who was symbolized as a flying dragon, or also called, a feathered serpent, or the Quetzal-like flying snake. In the native Nahuatl Aztec tongue, the name was Quetzalcoatl, also known in the Mayan mythology and history as Kukulcan, and other names attributed to him are Gucumatz, and Votan. He may have been called a feathered serpent because he was envisioned as a flying serpent, which brings to mind the flying dragons of mystic Chinese paintings. This symbol of the flying serpent represented one of the greatest gods of ancient Mexico. And yes, Mexico counts as far as Native American folklore goes.

Yes, they really do. The Northern California Coast tribes have a legend about "The Earth Dragon" (see source listing for further info). And I can't remember where I read it but I also believe that maybe the Navajo's, Zuni or Hopi have a dragon story as well.

Well, even though I am part Native American I couldn't tell you if they have dragons in their folklore. For Cherokeys I could say no, but they might be under a different name. Sorry this is all I know, try wikipedia.org to see what you get.

There are dragons in different American mythologies, but as people have mentioned already in this post, you won't find any like the European flying Smaug type beasts that breath fir, but there are giant serpents and such that exhale lightning, like the "Knife Head" and whatnot. If you want to learn about Native American monsters, look it up on google and you'll find scattered references. Just don't set your heart on finding a wyvern or a Fafnir.

I've listened to a lot of stories, from many tribes across this country and can honestly say I've NEVER heard anything about a 'dragon'. in the asian/euro flying fire spitting lizard type.

The azteca have a flying snake but we never had contact with them due to the desert that separates us.

dude at the bottom. I AM a northern California Indian. We have NO 'dragons'

What I have read the North Americans had something that resembled a Wyvern a dragon with 2 large wings and 2 legs.....but their wyvern was gold and had feathers along with a tail that was a dragons length but was gold and looked like a lions tail.....it had feathers on its head and body and was the size of 3 buffalo as they put it......it was said that there was only one of them and if seen then you would have good luck for the reset of your life!!!
