This has gone on for years, and it's caused by lack of oversight, carelessness, incompetence, bureaucratic tangles and outright fraud, Senator William Proxmire of Wisconsin used to give out what he called "golden fleece awards" for such spending. It's worthy of note that when he retired in 1988, no one in Congress continued his work.

I work in a business that could supply that product to a homeowner or a government agency. The knob that goes in government building and most commercial buildings will last many years. The knob that is cheap at Lowe's would hold up for a couple months in a public building setting.
I agree completely with your reasoning. The government wastes most of the money they take from us. They could easily find the best door knobs for under $100 (except keyed locks). This problem happens in nearly every aspect of government spending.
This is what happens when you get the chance to take someone else's money and spend it however you want. They know that all they have to do to get more is convince you that they are being "fiscally responsible" by raising taxes.
AAAAHHHHH. The wonderful world of government.
Let's get back the basics that the founding father's intended!

It's all about contracting. What, you think there's someone in HHA or HUD employed to buy doorknobs from Lowes?
Come on, people. The fact is that when the government contracts out for whatever, from fighter jets to doorknobs, it has specification, and it is to a prime contractor, who may then subcontract for portions of the contract.
They would have to certify, possibly even test, that said doorknob met the government specs for doorknobs of that type, then add the costs of acquiring, warehousing, transporting and installing said doorknob and the pro-rated overhead for each step, and voila! You have a $250 doorknob.
Which is why it continues to puzzle me why people want this same government to run their health care or their retirement.

You cant. Are system of government has become so corrupt the only way to stop corruption like this is if the American People decide to vote in a single 3rd party. Trace the $250 door knob, the manufacuter who got the contract to sell them, will have given lots of money to a politicians election fund.

I'm looking and looking and find no evidence to support your claim. It isn't just a matter of going to the store and getting a door knob. I work at Honeywell and receive indirect commodities. We have another company procure these items at a cost and charge us a percentage to obtain these.

you left out a lot more steps than just buying one.
you need a gov't engineer to write the knob spec.
the machinst to build the knob.
you have to pay for the logistics to go and get the knob.
but the knob.
pay someone to install the knob.

I know. Conservatives complain all day every day about high taxes, and then the government overpays for stuff like that.
Priorities people.Priorities.

Because a lot of voters would rather pay $250 for a doorknob and $3,000 for a toilet than see one corporation make one red cent in evil "PROFIT!"
