It was originally one of the Pictish kingdoms, known as Fib, and is still commonly known as the Kingdom of Fife within Scotland.

Lot of small Kingdoms in Scotland, Their Ruler was called Ri and the high king was the Ardri.

You appear to have had the sensible answers. I wonder if the Firf of Forf ( could it be first of fourth?) has anything to do with the matter. And surely a kindom must need a king.
