New pots not necessary.
I recently got a smooth top and I absolutely love, love, love it. The smooth tops these days are very strong, scratch resistant and durable. So easy to clean even with something spills and gets burned on. There are special cleansers for it, but not necessary to use them. Mr Clean magic erasures are great on them too. Even if there is food so burned on that you can't remove it the conventional way, you can use a straight edge razor to scrape it off. Now, what other stove can you do that too.
You don't have to worry, I've had mine almost a year now and it still looks brand new. I can't imagine what you could do to it to ruin it. Enjoy...Happy cooking

Just be careful "sliding" them across the surface. Make sure the pots and pans have flat (not warped) bottoms to make them work well and avoid hot spots.

take a scouring pad (SOS or Brillo) to the bottom of those pots and pans and you're all set with no need to buy new pots and pans.

No need for specialized pots and pans.
