I started out with 6 black neons. About 3 of them died. I then added two guppies, they both died. Another two black neons died, leaving just 1 black neon in the tank. I added 3 more black neons, all 3 new ones were dead within a couple of weeks.

What is going wrong? Is the one original black neon that I have had from the start killing all the other fish? Surely it can't be a water quality problem, or even the one surviving neon would have died. Right?

the most likely situation would be water PH
or contamination from an accessory

Silicon poisoning or hard water from a BAD rock
can kill and kill fast

Take a sample of your water to your local fish store
and ask them to test it. its usually free as you wont be
buying fish with BAD water

the other possibility is TEMPERATURE too hot is
easy to tell the fish float on top and GULP for air

but too cold is just as BAD and it sometimes goes unnoticed
got a heater? and a termometer?

Neons tend to be a weak fish that is prone to sudden deaths. The Guppies though are fairly hardy fish, so maybe you should look into the fish' prefered temperature. Some of the survivers could have adapted to the adverse water qualities while the weaker ones died. Just try to keep restocking until you find some strong fish... Because of Neon Tetra's and Guppies's popularity, breeding has been turned into mass production allowing weaker genes into the gene pool. These weak genes become magnified through continued careless breeding, leading to a weakened species of fish resulting in short lifespans.

your stocking your tank way to fast. If you are having problems with your tank you should go out and get new fish right awa. Thats adding to the problem.

While i could be bad stock from the petstore, chances are its your tank.

If your cycling than you need to get some water conditioners.

Also the problem is with all of these new fishes, you can possaible know if any of them are sick, as i have a feeling your noyt quaritining them first.

The best thing to do is a water change and not buy anyfish for 2 weeks. Allow your tank to calm down.

the water may have something in it not right for them. or the fishs didnt like the tempature change but the one is used to it. you may not be feeding the black fish enough so he is hungry and is eating the others.

listen to William F. I would have told you the same things. Get your water tested.
