lift up a floor vent and see if you can see it from their and by the way not a good idea to put ceramic on top of wood...
you nees a cement board which will give ceramic less of a chance to break......

The sub-floor does not determine the dead weight load of the floor. The floor joists (size and span) supporting the sub-floor are the main members that determine this. The sub-floor should be at least 1" X 6" planking or 5/8" floordeck or equivalent.

One answer stated to lay 3/4" plywood over the sub-floor and another said to lay cement board (should be 1/2" not 1/4") over the sub-floor.

Both answers are good. Make sure to use a hammer and drive all the sub-floor nails in whether or not they appear to be loose and replace any damaged boards before laying down either the 3/4" plywood or the 1/2" cement board.

You could drill a hole in an off traffic area, large enough to see the different floor strata and take a measurement.
Does that make sense?

Good luck
