Many areas have banned Cellose insullation which is treated with a fire retardant (Borax solution). This was done because the fire retardant leaches out of the insullation (usually over a period of about 10 years) due to heat in the attic. Without the fire retardant is posses a potential fire hazzard.

Another problem with blown in insullation is it can block roof ventilation if it is not done properly. If you are in an area that has a lot of high windy days, the blown in insulation can drift like sand in a dessert.

Bat insulation tends to stay where they are laid. It is more costly to install properly. Again, care has to be taken not to block attic ventilation.

Do google and/or yahoo searches on insulation contractors. Look for complaints and resolutions; insurance coverage; properly licenced; registration of company (has it expired - some ltd and inc companies still after the charters have been voided for some reason).

When you have found at least 3 companies that you would consider hiring, have the come and give you a written estimate (many companies do not like giving written estimates).

The wriiten estimate should state the work to be done with costs, extras and costs, guarantee, financing terms.

Good Luck

I had both blown in insulation and bat insulation added to my attic.

The blown in (hired out to professional) was nice because it could get into all the areas that I couldn't crawl into myself. I installed the bat insulation wherever I could reach.

I do believe that the bat has more insulation value, but I don't know for sure.

Having insulation is better than having none.

Air in the insulation makes it work. Blown-in settles after a time and removes the air. It is better than nothing but is not as good as batt insulation.
