I suggest you wait to start having sex until you are mature enough to not need to ask this question -- it is one of those questions that will become intuitively obvious later on in your life. The question sounds like it is coming from a 12 to 13yo. Unless you are engaged, I'm thinking you are too young to be asking this.

There was a time, not that long ago, when the average age of marriage was mid-teens. A 15yo or 16yo bride was not unusual. Now society has condemned the young to go another decade before marriage. And that decade is when the sex drive and hormones are driving them to have sexual relations.
