Ha!!!!!!
Got to answer FIRST :-)
I would much much rather have a phobia than a mania because it would be much easier to control it.
I have had phobias, several of them and I was able to work on them and overcome them in time.
I was afraid to drive on my own (because I had been in several accidents before I got my license) but with my persistence and strong will I was able to overcome this fear.
Wanna race ?:-)
I was also afraid to take stance and talk in front of an audience. This fear is under control now.
A mania now....
Well I don't think I would like to sit on a shrink's couch and I would feel really confined in a straight jacket...
So yes....
give me a phobia I'll overcome it.
Mania...I hope I never meet the lady
I hope she never crosses my road.
I don't mind being crazy about a few things though.....
So give me crazy
Give me mad
BUT KEEP the mania :-)

I would rather have a Phobia than a mania, with a phobia once you put your mind to it, you can conquer whatever it is that you are afraid of, but a mania, is not for me.

To Elenik- yes they are serious mental illnesses and can cause tremendous emotional distress, but people who experience a simple phobia are often "cured". It has one of the best outcomes with specific psychotherapeutic techniques. Of course, more complicated situations (e.g., bipolar disorder), may need ongoing control, but many people can function quite well.
I take a different perspective on this question- would I want too much inhibition or unrealistic fear or too little inhibition and too little appropriate fear.
I could live a life very safe but very limited or live without restrictions and likely to face significant danger (just not be aware of it). It is a great question!
I want to say manic although I wonder if I would really be able to appreciate the sense of power that mania gives one. Without the backdrop of real fear...Can you really appreciate what you can do, if you feel like you can do everything! With a phobia you are severly limited but you get to appreciate what little you can do.
Neither gives much-too much imbalance. Since neither one is going to provide any real pleasure, I'll pick mania. At least I'll get a heck of a lot done...until get too manicky.

As I'm prone to being manic when I'm interested in anything, and terrified of snakes, and very uneasy about spiders -- I'd say I'd rather have a mania than a phobia. But I'd rather have neither and just potter along which is about all I'm good for now anyway.

I would rather have a phobia. When I was a child, I was afraid of heights. As I got older, I learned how to deal with it and not let it be a big problem.
I would rather phobia since I already know I can deal with it.

you must be kidding, right???????!!!... neither of the two! have you ever had a phobia or a mania? do you know the difference? they both are severe mental diseases... what's the point in this question, anyway?
well, neither is treatable, you can only control it... it depends of course on the kind of mania or phobia you have. some are the worst thing that can happen to one. and since i know a lt about them, i have to tell you i'm surprised with your question... it bothers me a bit, but it's just my opinion.
so my answer is: i'd like to be tottally healthy if i could. who wouldn't?
