I'm a Lions fan and season ticket holder so I am obviously going through a lot of loss. We try and have as much fun with the tailgating aspect that we pretty much could care less about the outcome of the game. We bought an RV for tailgating for this year and it is really turning into quite a planned event with our friends. We're arranging a chili cookoff in the parking lot and looking for other ways to have fun while we can more than likely expect another Lions loss.

I am a Cleveland Browns fan and have been for my entire life so I guess I have formed an immunity from the pain of loss. Instead of worrying about the losses I just celebrate the wins(even when they are few and far between). I think that the best thing to do as a real fan is just stick by the team and not be a bandwagon fan of any other team. I know as far as basketball goes I am also a lifelong Phoenix Suns fan and it is way harder when they lose because they are so good. I just look towards next season and hope things turn out better. Just don't give up on the team. If you are disappointed just imagine how disappointed the team, themselves are!

Wow, I didn't realize that anyone could answer this question. I just naturally assumed that it was for fans of the Detroit Lions.
LOL
Since only one Team can win everyone who watches has to learn how to eat crow. With only one winner there are 31 other Teams that suck. Whether your 1-15 or 15 -1, if you dont win it all your no different from the other 30 Teams.
Good players dont let mistakes bring them down so as a fan I just shake off a loss and hope for the best the following week.
Oh and a few beers doesn't hurt either lol.

There is hope...my Broncos suffered through a 2-7 1982 season and appeared in three Super Bowls before the end of the 1980s...admittedly the actual Super Bowls weren't all that enjoyable.
Bucs and Rams were horrid through the 1990s and both have been quite competitive since the turn of the Century.
Then there is the best example...Pats had some awful years in the 1980s and 90s before becoming the the team of the decade.
The problem is, there are also teams like the Cards and Lions who never seem to get out of this losing spiral.
With salary caps and free agency, all teams have a shot to turn that corner...but depends on the quality of management they have.

Well, I understand that Cornhusker fans, who are suffering from several losing seasons after being champions for several decades, are doing it this way: "the team needs us more than ever -- what kind of fans are we if we only support them during the winning seasons?" Which is a little bit precious, if you ask me, but I never was a football fan.
A sport is about the agony of defeat as much as it is about the exuberance of victory. Support them during the tough times, and the sweet times will be that much sweeter. You can also pay more attention to the side issues of a game -- the cheers, the cheerleaders, the tail-gate parties, the peanut vendors, the really cool mowing patterns on a modern baseball diamond.
If all else fails, you can find another hobby for awhile, then go back to your sport when your team starts winning again. The others will call you a fair-weather fan, but hey, isn't it better than suffering?

Hockey may be a different sport, but the same principle applies. As a New York Rangers and Mets fan, I am very used to my team sucking. My family sort of deals with it with a sense of humor about the losses, and treats the wins as something ironic.
Most importantly, we root as hard as if the team was actually any good. After all, durin a 10-year span in which teh Rangers didn't make the playoffs, we had better attendance than Ottawa, which made the playoffs (or was in the race at least) each of those years.
So pretending is always nice.
It's also really fun to vehemently root against your rival team. That way you feel like you're still winning something. Islanders suck, yo.
And when the team actually starts to be good, it just makes it sweeter.

As a fan of the Minnesota Vikings, I usually get really excited after their first 6 games of the season and am expecting a victory in their 7th (like in '03, 04, and 06), then they suck. I stay optimistic that they can pull a victory out against any of their opponents because they've already shown they can win. I'm a diehard Vikings fan and will never switch off a game because they're sucking. The real pain is watching their offense (who would've expected that in Minnesota heading into '04?).

You cheer them on anyway, dont ever ever ever ever ever turn on your team. You can have alot of discussions about what your guys need to do to improve next year and there is always hoping they end up spoiling someones playoff hopes (hopefully the Cowboys).
After suffering for many years with losing seasons, bad drafts, and the 3 NFC Championship games lost in a row and a Superbowl loss the one thing anyone can tell you about me is I have been and will always be by the Eagles side. Yes I was even a fan during the Rodney Peete days (yuck)

Great Question.
When the Colts were in Baltimore Year, after Year, after Year etc..... I had to put up with a awful , awful team. It drove me crazy.
But now there is a solutions to that problem."Fantasy Football"
You still get to watch you favorite team whether they suck or not.
But with Fantasy Football you own your team and you watch there stats eagerly during the live telecast hoping that one of your fantasy players has given you some points. The trade offers you'll receive during the season...The trash talking by other teams..... The question of who to play all the way up to Game time keeps you on the edge.
And it gives you something to cheer about during your long Football season if your Home team isn't doing so well.
