I have a 2.5 gallon with an under gravel filtered tank that has a single Half-Moon Betta in it. I vacuum every 1-2 weeks and do a 50% water change then. It is 1/2 planted and 1/2 silk plants.
I have a 5 gallon with an in-tank Whisper filter that has a Crowtail Betta, 2 Corys and a large Ghost shrimp. I vacuum twice a week and do 1/3 water changes each time. It is 100% planted.
I have been on the fence about putting an in-tank filter in the 2.5 gallon tank. But so far my PH levels have stayed low and my Betta is doing great. LOL---my other Bettas lives in a fishy palace and is very happy :)

It depends on the size of the tank. In a 5 gallon tank (with a filer), assuming the Betta is the only fish, you should clean it once every 2 weeks. If it is in anything smaller (with a filter), once a week. If it is in a container without a filter (in this case, size doesn't matter), the tank would need to be cleaned almost twice a week to keep your Betta healthy, and relaxed. If you can, give your Betta a heater and filter. Good luck!

Here is a profile of the betta fish on FishChannel.com. It says to change the water frequently and it gives you tips on keeping more than one betta.

i have two i gallon betta bowls they seem very content in. i clean them like every two weeks but add water almost every day when it evaporates. depending on how often u feed and how much food wastes will also make a diffierence on how fast the water spoils.

with a filter you can clean the tank and do a 25% water change every week.
without a filter i would do clean and change 25% of water every 2 days.
