Check to be sure that neither the power or ribbon cable as come lost from the CD or the system board.

On bootup, press whatever key will take you into the computer's BIOS Set Up screen. So if the drive is being recognized there. You may have to have the BIOS redetect the drive. Most have an "autodetect" features.

If it still will not see it, the CD drive itself may have gone bad. Try swapping it with one from another CD and see if the problem goes with the CD drive (in which case the drive is bad).

Judging by the age of the computer I'd bet your CD drive is dead. If you replace it you can get a CD burner pretty cheap these days around 40 dollars or less if you look around. If you need just a CD-ROM drive then 30 dollars or less.

Removal of old and installation of new drive is pretty easy. If your not comfortable doing it take it to Staples and have their EasyTech install it for you.

no i am joking the drive died i bet di you open your computer did it get unpluged restart it it may be in safe mode. some times that hapens

do they even open?

You may need drivers for that under ME. ~
XP installs them automatically.
