I disabled the option which allows me to use both mouse and the touchpad for navigation a long time ago. There's no problem with my Synaptics touchpad driver and I can't seem to find the option under Control Panel > Mouse.

So basically the problem is I can't use the touchpad (hey..the touchpad driver was enabled and there is no hardware conflicts) and I had no intentions of using the USB mouse for long time sake... So, where is it?

In the mouse control panel there is an option to turn the touchpad on or off. There should also be a notification area icon (may be hidden) to turn it on or off.

Normally the touchpad will add a tab into the Control Panel/Mouse just for the touchpad. If it is not there, you will probably need to reinstall the drivers for the touchpad to get it back. Go to the laptop manufacturer's web site and download it. Once reinstalled you should have the touchpad option again.

This shud not happen in WinXP Pro, where u dont have to choose either touchpad or usb mouse.

Try re-install ur touchpad synaptic driver and update the driver to latest version, if this still not work, u shud check ur touchpad, bcoz sometimes the pad it self got a problem.

Does your touchpad show up in the Device Manager? If not, it may be disabled in the BIOS settings. You'll need to boot up into the CMOS settings and re-enable it.

If it does show up, make sure that the driver details show that the device is found and operating correctly and doesn't have a "yellow bang" exclamation point on it. If you get a bang, there's usually some code in the Device Manager properties to help you figure out what's going wrong.

If that fails, try uninstalling it from the Device Manager, then Scan for New Devices (right click the Computer Name in Device Manager) and let the OS reinstall from scratch.

If that fails, I'd contact Synaptics or your laptop vendor.
