My husband can't seem to part with certain magazines, which is creating a storage issue. I am currently using large plastic containers that are stackable but that still takes up too much room. There is probably 200 magazines.

200 magazines are going to take up a lot of room no matter how they are stored. Can he go through the magazines and remove the pages that have something of interest? About 50% of magazines are advertising, so does he think he really needs to keep the ads as well? Is he still collecting? If so, he may have to eventually rent a small storage unit unless you have space in your home for a growing collection.

Do you have a bookcase? If not, do you have room for one? Or, maybe they could be stored in a couple of wicker trunks that could also serve as "coffee tables" or end tables in your living room. There are also lidded, plastic storage containers that are designed to slide under beds. You could also stack the magazines in file cabinet drawers, and place the file cabinet in a closet. Maybe you could store the stackable containers you already have on a heavy-duty shelf in the garage. Good luck.

Stack them around his easy chair. He can use them as a sidetable, or he can realize that maybe he has a few too many magazines.

Check and see if his favorites are available in a CD-rom form (if he is computer literate).

They are really his problem. I would ask him to pare them down, or put them in his space -- for example, his closet.

He can pare them down by doing several things:

Keep only the magazines that have "evergreen" news. I keep two or three years of herb and garden magazines in six baskets, sorted out by the months. I rotate them every two months, and keep the ones I'm not reading in the attic.

He can go through the magazines and clip the articles that have special interest to him -- make sure he has lots of folders and a file box (or two) so he can find them again. Binders with clear pages that you can insert an article into is also a good way to corral magazine articles.

He can also take a good look at the internet, and realize that most of the info he'll ever need is there.

You can't really decide this for him. He'll resent it. But if you point out the fire hazards (and the rodent hazards -- mice love old magazines!), maybe he'll do something. Also, if he has to trip over them constantly, maybe he'll be motivated.

Good luck with this! You might try flylady.net for more ideas for accepting your spouse's need to hold on to things.

Where are you keeping them? If they need to be displayed you can get stackable cubes. If they don't need to be displayed & he doesnt look at them maybe you should try & get him to part with 1/3 of them. My boyfriend tries to save car magazines. He says they have tips for working on his car in them but he NEVER looks at them. I bought him a large binder and page protectors & i have him rip out the pages that he finds interesting. If he's still unwilling maybe you could get a cabinet to keep them in & tell him that is all the space he gets for them & if it gets too full he will have to pare down.
