In the Eastern Philosophy this syndrome is called "maya", not to be confused with Mexican Maya.

If you ask people what they want , they cannot immediately answer except listing things like Money , power , job , cars , homes .... . If you ask them further the question "Why these?" they may not be able to reply. The real reason as why people want things is because they all want a lasting happiness. ( mind the word "lasting") .

They desire something hoping that it will give them joy for ever. But, soon they find out that such a happiness is not everlasting. If anything it lasts for a very short time. Even after learning this truth they seek some other thing and the same is repeated . Possibly they may feel that small happiness , if they come one after the other, will give them a feeling of continuous happiness. Soon they reach a point where they are not able to get what they want. This makes them feel ( maya) that because this is not available they are unhappy.

The fact is that people keep discovering things that are not giving them lasting happiness and never question as to what is real happiness and where one should look for.

Because material things are lifeless & needed for only 1 purpose. You'll always want 1 thing that you don't have because you didn't have the experience with it yet. Also, there's technology : it'll always make a thing more good & more improved. Thus, once you've got the new thing, you won't want what you have anymore.

Most people misinterpret that "having" it is the attraction, when in reality it's the "being able to get it' that was the underlying seduction.

For others, the not having it has built up an unreasonable expectation of what it would be like to have it. Once you get it, the reality falls short of the expectation which leads to disappointment.
