There was a Hokkaido earthquake around 11:20 p.m. Japan time on July 16 -- earlier in the day, there was one in Niigata which was quite destructive. Was the Hokkaido earthquake related to that, or pretty much a seperate event?
Also, where does one go on the internet to find news about very recent earthquakes in Japan? I know the TV stations broadcast info about earthquakes and tsunami, but if I miss the announcement, I've been having a hard time finding the right words to put in the search engine. Japanese sites are OK.
BTW, I tried USGS, but they didn't have it right away.

Try the USGS, Mr. Man. They have a world map that shows some of the recent strong earthquakes. It looks like there have been a lot this year -- but mostly around the Pacific Plate, only a few scattered in other areas. However, it looks like they don't show *all* the earthquakes. They ask people to report earthquakes not shown on the map. Good luck!
