There was a Hokkaido earthquake around 11:20 p.m. Japan time on July 16 -- earlier in the day, there was one in Niigata which was quite destructive. Was the Hokkaido earthquake related to that, or pretty much a seperate event?

Also, where does one go on the internet to find news about very recent earthquakes in Japan? I know the TV stations broadcast info about earthquakes and tsunami, but if I miss the announcement, I've been having a hard time finding the right words to put in the search engine. Japanese sites are OK.

BTW, I tried USGS, but they didn't have it right away.

Try the USGS, Mr. Man. They have a world map that shows some of the recent strong earthquakes. It looks like there have been a lot this year -- but mostly around the Pacific Plate, only a few scattered in other areas. However, it looks like they don't show *all* the earthquakes. They ask people to report earthquakes not shown on the map. Good luck!

USGS is probably the first place to find out about the science of the earthquake (epicenter, how large), but news services probably have actual news about the effects of the earthquake much sooner.

Maybe bbcnews, abcnews or cnn is faster.

I hope this helps.

Wow.... Japan is known to be a country prone to earthquakes and I imagine people must be pretty wary of such natural disasters ... Earthquakes have after shocks or delayed tremours - so could be the two are related

type 'Recent 6.0+Earthquakes' in google search and it throws up all the major quakes in recent times....
