This is probably a stupid question...but how do you underline words?

No such thing as a stupid question, only stupid answers.

You can press CTRL and U to underline (or CTRL + B to bold and CTRL + I to italicise). Alternatively at the top of the screen in one of the tool bars is 3 icons, a B an I in italics and a U that is underlined. Click the U to underline your text.

Note that the U is under lined

That would depend on where you are doing it. In a word processor just select the underline format (usually ctrl u). In HTML you can use the underline tag , here in Yahoo Answers you can't do it.
