Go to the classics. Pick up books like Don Quixote, the Three Muskateers, Utopia, and the other classics. Shakespeare. Gibson. Shaw.
Good luck,

Read the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. The series basically shows the true nobility of spirit and human perseverance. It has a lot of adventure. Also very graphic. There are several epic battles as people fight for their very existence. It's considered to be part of the sci-fi/fantasy genre. Hope this helps.

I find that memoirs or autobiographies usually do this for me, but the subject matter HAS to be interesting. I read a book recently called ALL SOULS, it was written by a guy who grew up in the South Boston Projects during the Busing and Whitey era. It was so freakin' good and it says alot about people and the bad/good things we can do to each other. Murder, hate, suicide, family unity, heritage, racism-it was sooo good.

Brave New World or Lord of the Flies should do the trick for you, both are amazing stories.
I also agree Neil Gaiman is a good choice, try American Gods or Neverwhere (no they are not religious :P)

Read anything by the late, great Kurt Vonnegut. He's a freakin' genius. Start with God Bless You Mr. Rosewater.

You probably read the Little Prince as a child.
Try reading it again. There's more than meets the eyes.
