This is a very oversimplified answer.

Basically, you have to do two things to protect your trademark:

1. File an application and pay the fee ($325 per classification)
2. Prove to the US Patent and Trademark Office that you are using the mark, and that it distinguishes your company's goods or services from those of other companies.

This procedure is tedious enough that you may wish to enlist the help of an Intellectual Property Attorney. A really good IP Law firm is cited below (I used to work for them as their IT Manager).

Wow, too much info for something so simple. All you really need to do is create a copyright symbol and put it next to the logo.

If you want the logo to be pantented or trademarked as well, you have to pay a fee. Then you can put a TM symbol next to the logo.
