Maybe they were lying? Maybe they were mad? Who witnessed them doing so? I think some torture victims do laugh in the face of their torturer near death to pee them off.
God seems to have no power at all in this day and age to spare people pain, He certainly doesn't spare my pain or that of anyone I've known (even as a nurse; and I've looked after a nun once).
What definitely spares you pain is meditation and getting yourself into a state of altered consciousness, because your mind can cancel almost any pain, and I've practised that myself so know how well it works - far better than simple prayer.
I think those who do feel God spares their pain are most probably very devout people who put themselves into a state of altered consciousness via prayer and it's this that spares their pain rather than God's direct intervention.
I think God gave us the capacity to control our mind/brain in this way to spare our own pain.

I wish I could believe it but it is hard, I have been thru a lot of medical stuff and a lot of pain, I always prayed for the pain to go away, of course it always did but no for quite awhile, I guess I believe he could spare pain but does not always do it for some reason that I hope one day I will find out.

Yes, that's almost as impressive as the bit in Harry Potter, where wizards could cast a spell on themselves so that when muggles thought they were being burnt at the stake all they were really feeling was a mild tickling!
Of course, the Harry Potter books do have some underpinning morality, unlike your god-fables, where your psychotic Deity saves some sycophants yet lets millions die horribly in war, famine, pestilence, holocaust etc etc!

you can control pain with your mind, and also i think with your hands. If you hit your leg or something really hard the natural instinct is to hold it and squeeze which usually eases the pain and i once burnt my hand ion the oven so i licked it and the pain went and it didn't blister.
