Can I install two 1 GB memory sticks, even though the specs say that the limit is 512MB in each memory slot? Is this a constraint of the motherboard or something else? I'm running XP Home, with an AMD Athlon.

You can only have whatever it says. If you add more, it will not work. It is a constraint of the motherboard, it just cannot support anything more.

It is a limitation in the system BIOS. All I can say is check with HP and see if they did a BIOS update, if so check the changes that were made and see if they enabled larger RAM capability.

It's a frustrating thing since the processors and XP/Vista can recognize up to 2 GB of system memory. A lot of retail PC's have this artificial limiting known as "built-in obsolescences" to put it simply they intentionally kept the upgradeablity of system memory low so you would be more likely to replace your system sooner. The worst offender in my experience has been Gateway and e-Machines.

relies upon what you're doing...i assume Vista, wherein case i might accept as true with the above poster. 32bit XP isn't getting a lot extra desirable than it might with 2gb ram so if that's what you're working, then bypass with the upgraded processor. in case you may make the main of the ram, you're staring at an substantial boost in ram as against a marginal boost in cpu overall performance on a twin center and additionally you will see a extra effective boost in overall performance for non video/photograph modifying form function in case you bypass with the ram.

you can put as much as you want (4gb at most because 2 gb is the largest stick atm) ut it will only recognise 1gb of it
windows XP and 32bit vista can only support at most 3gb of ram only 64 bit vista can handle any more - up to 16gb i believe

Try before you buy. But all 32bit CPU's should be able to handle upto 4GB standard. Duno the issues with Mobos though

your mobo will not support it...if you try to do that...at best it will only "see" a max of 512 per slot...at worst it will not boot at all and all you'll get is the BIOS beep for incompatible ram...

they tell you there is a max for a reason, it's not a joke or suggestion..it's a fact.
