Recently, I've been experiencing vaginal itching, not constantly, but periodically throughout the day. I also have a small amount of discharge that has a yellowish tint. I know it's not a yeast infection because I've taken an antibiotic (previously given by my doctor for a previous incident) and I still have these symptoms. Previously when I had sex it was fine, but recently sex has become very painful. There is a burning sensation when he enters me, and it hurts during and after sex. I only have one sexual partner, and I've had a pap that has come back negative for an std. I'm in the process for finding a new doc, and I'd really appreciate intelligent answers for home remedies or over the counter medications. Has anyone else experienced these symptoms before? If so, what did you do about it?

Yikes. First of all, you have quite a bit of misinformation going here: 1) Antibiotics do NOT kill yeast, antifungals such as Nystatin and Chlortrimazole do. Right after the first time a woman ever uses an antibiotic is the first time many of them experience yeast infections, in fact. Antibiotic use indiscriminately murders all the intestinal flora you have going, good or bad. These colonies of beneficial bacteria are precisely what keeps yeast in check and so when the beneficial colonies are murdered, the yeasts tend to completely overwhelm the gut. The symptoms you're descibing actually are spot-on descriptions of an active yeast infection--EXACTLY, so I recommend you go get cultured/diagnosed and begin treatment for a yeast infection, if indeed that's what they find. Just because you're only sleeping with one person, doesn't mean he or she is, too...). Additionally, a pap smear does NOT test for STD's. It tests for irregular cells in your cervix. ONLY. Normally, and especially if asked, a gynecologist can and will test for STD's as a normal part of an exam, especially now in the age of HIV and AIDS, but there are those that you have to still ask to do this. Yes, cervical displasia can be caused by an STD, HPV, which is Human Papilloma Virus aka Venereal Warts, but there are many women who have come down with full scale cervical cancer who test negatively for the HPV virus. It is not the only cause of this extremely serious and often fatal disease. Please, if you're going to live in a woman's body: Get yourself some better information and some better materials to study and teach yourself some things, okay? You need a good user's manual. I suggest the Boston Women's Health Book Collective's Our Bodies, Ourselves. As far as yeast infections are concerned: You can try plain yogurt slathered on a tampon. Make SURE it contains active cultures. It definitely will help with calming down and cooling the symptoms, if what you have is truly a yeast infection. So will vinegar douching and vinegar-soaked tampons, but you must be very careful to dilute the vinegar enough or it will burn like hell! Oftentimes when yeast has gotten out of control, a systemic drug becomes necessary as does radically altering the diet to change your body's pH. This involves eliminating all sugars, artificial sweeteners, white flour, and usually almost all, if not all, carbohydrates for a long, long while. This is very difficult to do, as most women crave carbs, especially around their moons. Yeast is an insidious little bugger and it is very, very hard to kill. Usually if one has it vaginally, one has it rectally as well. People can even get it in their ear canals and throats when it's really out of control...It thrives in wet, dark, moist environments ("Hello! Vaginas!" and "Hello! Intestines!") and lives off sugars and carbohydrates, as I said. Typically in Alternative Medicine, grapefruit seed extract is used to kill the yeast. It is sold under the name Parakan by the Traditional Nutriceuticals Company, I believe. Please ask for more info if you need it. I wish you well, and I hope you will soon sort out what is going on!

Several things here. You have an infection so go see the doc and get this diagnosed and treated and second once you do ask your doc if your partner needs to get tested and treated. Second no sex until you see the doc. in case you are passing this infection back and forth between the two of you. Third a pap smear DOES NOT TEST FOR STD it merely tests for abnormal cervix cells. There is no home rememdy nor over the counter thing to try because you have to go see a doctor to get this diagnosed and treated. Call today and go see a doc.

actually it is very likely that you do have a yeast infection. Taking antibiotics CAUSE yeast infections. You see, yeast grows naturally in our body's orofices, usually our naturally present bacteria eats the yeast and keeps in under control. But when we take antibiotics for some other infection, they also kill our normal bacteria as well, leaving the yeast to go wild and overgrow causing the symptoms you are experiencing. Get some Monistat and treat your yeast infection.

it can actually still be a yeast infection even if you took medication for it. your body can actually build up a quick immunity against yeast infection medication especially if you have used it before. you may need a stronger dosage but then again if it is not a yeast infection you would only make your body more immune to the medication in the future. i strongly suggest that you speed up this process of finding a new doctor. there are many websites of home remedies you can use to soothe itching and stuff to put in a bath to restore the ph balance of your vagina. i would look it up for you but im at work and imagine the looks i would get if my coworkers saw me browsing that :P. one time i heard that a coat of honey helps but i have never had the need for such things. i hope you get this resolved.

Unfortunately most of the infections, whether it be bacterial, viral, std have most of the same symptoms, itching, discharge, odor. Best thing to do is to not try to treat it over the counter or by yourself as those treatments can worsen the problem and see a doctor asap.

Sounds to me like you could use a doctor's visit. It could be bacterial vaginosis - and you'll need a prescription to clear it up. Does the discharge smell like fish? If yes, then you definitely need to see a doctor. Bacterial vaginosis is NOT a yeast infection and taking medicine to treat a yeast infection will make bacterial vaginosis worse.

antibiotics CAUSE yeast infections. the antibiotics kill the bacteria in your vagina and eliminate the competition, so the fungus (yeast) that all women naturally have in their bodies, goes out of control.
go see a doctor and get tested for yeast infection. that is what it sounds like to me.

First off, a PAP test does NOT screen for STD's. You need to have specific testing for STD's. Please see a doctor ASAP. A yellow discharge accompanied with pain and itching is an indication that there is something wrong.
