im using xp on a laptop and i have an extra montior hooked up to it on dualview. The monitor is a 17" and my laptop screen is about a 14". When my desktop background is displayed it is bigger and doesnt show the whole picture on the new monitor. What do i need to do to make the images appear the same on both monitors?

This is because your external monitor has a higher resolution that your laptop screen. So the image that fill the laptop screen is not a high enough resolution to fill the external monitor.

What you can do is change the position for your background image to 'Stretch'. (Display Properties > Desktop > Position pull down on the right side.)

This will make windows scale the picture to fill the screen.

Since the picture is been scaled up on the monitor it may look slightly fuzzy. If this is a problem, get a picture that is the correct resolution for the external monitor (1280 by 1024 probably) and then windows will scale that down for the laptop screen. That may look better.

Well first of all you asked 2 questions and presented it as 1

The desktop wallpaper setting for dual view is set mode
to stretch (not tile of full)

the 14 " display and 17" maybe very similiar
you failed to state if either was a 16:9 display

the first display size to have no real issues
with sizing is the 19" digital display
some 19" analog and almost all 21" or larger
have no problems with display sizes

Your best method will be to set both to 1024x768 mode
and compare the images, fonts, and Icons on each
desktop
then increase the resolution to what ever you feel most comfortable with

with desktop wallpaper to set to stretch mode it will remain
to fill the screen with each change in resolution
