what does "#" mean?

i only ask because a friend of mine just wrote

ok i will talk to you later my # is (then he wrote a number, i dnt know if it was his home or cell)

# means number as in his phone number is..... it doesn't specify whether its a home or cell it just means number

It just means number. Without writing the word "number" out. It could be any number, cell or home.
