Think that the tetras are about 1 inch long

That's going to depend in large part on your filter, the shape of the tank and your willingness to do water changes. Assuming you strongly filter the tank and change at least 25% of the water once a week there is no reason you can have at least 100 of the 1" tetras in the tank.

Well, if the tank is 75 gallons, and they're 1' long, probably start out with 40-50. Because, they may be bigget than that or grow more. Personally, I thought they grew to 2'. If they grow to two inces then, only put in about 40.

A rule I heard once from an expert is this: one inch of fish for every gallon. So your start with about 50 because they will grow in a large aquarium.

I've heard you have one fish per gallon.
