Check this out.. My wife in Germany has a German friend whom she is: Female, 50 years old, is 164 meters high, and weighs 50 kg takes multivitamin, workout about 3 times a week; running, aerobics etc. She eats one brotchen in the mornings with three cups of coffee, each cup of coffee she addtionally adds two tablespoon full of instant coffee. She eats lots of sweets and she thinks she is overweight. My wife believes she is not bulimic or anorexia but the point is that the lady thinks that is better to be underweight than overweight. My wife said to her that it is dangerous to be underweight. The lady does not believe it. When my wife researched in the internet all that she found was that underweight people might have vitamin deficiency, problem with her period, anemia, but really nothing else compared to overweight people which have a mountain of things that can go wrong including heart attacks. If a person does not have Anorexia or Bulimia is it dangerous to be underweight?if so, How?

she sounds anorexic to me. all that coffee and the sweets are not good for her.

it is indeed better to be a healthy underweight person than an unhealthy overweight person.
however the medical information you read is about unhealthy obese ppl (there is a big difference between obesity and being a bit overweight). obese ppl have unhealthy eating and living habits which is what contributes to their health problems.
your wife's friend is also on a collision track with disaster unless she starts eating healthy, and getting help for her eating disorder.

Your wife's friend is actually correct: It is far, far better to be underweight than overweight. If you need or want additional information on this, e-mail me, but let me suffice it to say that during WWII when food was so hard to get, especially foods like meat, eggs, butter, dairy based foods, almost everyone lost weight. Many people found that their health conditions such as allergies, asthma, high blood pressure, diabetes, some heart diseases disappeared or got markedly better. So much of what we eat is quite simply our undoing, especially animal foods and full fat products. You can also easily research these issues online for yourself. It is also an issue of how "underweight" she is. If she's five feet, she should weigh around 100lbs. with approximately 5lbs for every inch thereover. These are pretty traditional rules of thumb, taken I think from insurance actuarial tables. A little less weight won't hurt anyone, either. To kind of get your head all around this, just think how much torque and force each additional 10lbs we are overweight exerts on our hips, knees, ankles, feet, legs, just in the act of standing erect and then walking. The pounds per square inch on our feet alone are outrageous! I think I read it was something like 600lbs of force per square inch of the average adult foot. That's an immense amount of stress! Imagine how much that goes up for each additional 10lbs...

Eat only when hungry and not more than thrice a day. Nothing other than water in between. Include plenty of uncooked vegetables and fruits in each meal, preferably 50%. Chew each morsel at least 32 times to activate ur body to generate signals of hunger/fullness. Obey these signals.

Take light exercises and brisk walks regularly preferably twice a day.

U will achieve what u have not even dreamt and that too in a reasonable time. Do not be in a hurry.

being underweight also decreases the immune response, those who are underweight cannot fight off infection or illness as well as others. They tend to be slower to heal as well. The body spends most of it's energy just keeping the underweight body going, so when something outside the norm happens, the body cannot adjust as readily.

The woman sounds anorexic to me. Living off of coffee is not healthy at all. Living on sugar is not healthy. She believes she is overweight. She doesn't eat healthy food. Definitely sounds anorexic. Why would someone think that she is not anorexic?
