does he have any hobbies like collecting old music records or stamps wht i mean is get him somthing he has wanted like one of his fav music records somthing like that,ur kids can make a handmade card which he'll treasure forever or How about getting him 50 small presents! Have a look on ebay or anywhere esle and find things from the year he was born, you'll be amazed what great items you will find!

If he is a handyman, get him a gift cirtificate for a place where he can buy tools. And if he isn't, a nice dinner out is always good.

collect all photos with all his achievements and most precious moments so far: his kids, wife, grand kids, wedding, his first car, the house, a trophy he may have won , etc and put them in an album.
