4x² - x - 3 = 0

4x² - 4x + 3x - 3 = 0

4x(x - 1) + 3(x - 1) = 0

(4x + 3)(x - 1) = 0

You have to look at the factors. 4x^2 can be x and 4x or 2x and 2x. The last term can be -1 and +3 or +1 and -3.

The 2x can be ruled out since it would make the middle term +-4

4x and x for the first term.
If you put the +-3 where it multiplies the 4x term, your middle term will be +-11

That leave putting the +-3 term with the 4x

(4x+3)(x-1)
checking to make sure
4x^2-4x+3x-3=4x^2-x-3
checks out.
I hope the explanation is clear enough.
