36a² - 1 = 0

(6a - 1)(5a + 1) = 0

This is what's known as a difference of squares. It can be factored as (6a + 1)(6a -1). The middle term cancels out and you are left with just 2 terms.

36a^2-1 --> Write the problem.
36a^2-1^2 --> Rewrite 1 as 1^2.
(6a+1)(6a-1) --> Use difference of two squares i.e. a^2-b^2=(a+b)(a-b).

So the answer is (6a+1)(6a-1).
