Is it possible that my power supply unit is burning out my hard drives. I have had 3 new hard drives fail on me now in 14 months. first i got an 80gb hard drive and it lasted 12 months, then i had it replaced 1 day before its warranty expired and that on lasted 2 months then that one was replaced yesterday and the new one has gone today. They all follow the same path. Windows freezing then when rebooting it says Invalid Boot disk blah blah and all they do is CLUNK all the time

The drive will take no more power than it needs E.g. if it needs 1amp then a supply that can deliver 50 amps wont damage it cos it will still use 1 amp.
If your power supply was providing to much voltage this could cause problems but the motherboard would be the first casualty also if this happens the PSU would shut down (in protection mode).
The sounds you hear lead me to belive the faults on the drives are mechanical and not electrical.
Sounds like you have bought into a bad batch of drives. (Delivery man dropped the box from a hieght) if I was you I would take the drive back demand a refund and obtain a different brand from another supplier.

Sure, anything is possible. Are your fans working? You may want to check your system temperatures and other important things like that. There is a neat program out there called Sandra which helps you do this so you can figure out more directly what the problem is. (http://www.sisoftware.co.uk/index.html?dir=&location=pinformation&langx=en&a)
It's also possible that you can just go down to a computer store and they can take a look at stuff and tell you what is wrong.

Maxtor Clunking can be fixed with a firmware update.

However a PSU could be the cause, sometimes it's because the voltage is too irregular and causes the drive heads to become erratic

Another thing to think about is the temperature in the case. Maybe you should install a new CPU fan or add in another fan to the side of your case. We bought a case fan for $15 and it is super quiet. You should shut down your computer when you aren't using it as well to prevent overheating.

If they have all been the same model hard drive, it is quite possible that it is just a crap make/model of drive.
Try a reputable make such as Seagate or Western Digital.

it sounds very possible. how much power does the PSU supply? is it something ridiculous to run a bunch of modded hardware? check to see what the HDs are rated for before you throw them in.
