The Gold Glove is given for consistent performance, not a couple of highlight catches.
Freel makes good plays once in a while, but you should check his fielding stats before you sing too many praises of him. His zone rating is a less-than-stellar .865, which puts him closer to the bottom than the top in that category. Compare that to someone like Grady Sizemore with a .920+, and you'll see that Freel doesn't even get to a lot of balls that others do. Same goes for his range factor, which isn't good.
Anecdotally, I used to watch Freel a lot when I lived in the Cincinnati area, and I was never that impressed with him. He was one of those players announcers like to call "gritty," which is a term generally reserved for moderately talented white players. I've seen him misplay a ton of balls, and the only reason he seems to make good catches is because he gets a bad jump and has to catch up with the play.

Because he is not one of the top 3 defensive outfield players in the NL. You have to take Andruw Jones as the top one Carlos Beltran as a strong number 2 and then there are at least a dozen more before Your guy would even be considered. It is also a popularity contest and once you win one you most likely win more. Torri Hunter received a gold glove in 2005 and didn't even play 100 games. Its something the is based on reputation.

It is not a help to Freel having to split his time between multiple positions. The Gold Glove will go to the best defensive player who plays that position all year. Also, Freel has a lot of speed and can get to balls that others can't but he has more than his share of errors on routine plays. Like you, we have all seen him make those spectacular plays but that is not what wins gold gloves. Year after year his fielding percentage is in the .970's and .980's and that is not good enough to win gold gloves.

The award is given out based on the votes of the managers and coaches. He obviously isn't making much of an impression on the people who know the most about the game and the players.

Another issue is that he isn't holding down a consistant defensive position if he is playing 6 of them.
There isn't a utility gold glove, perhaps there should be, but right now, there isn't.

Did you see him in center this series against the mets? he misplayed at least 4 balls and was responsible for at least 5 runs that should have been outs

it is because he is basically a super-utility player, same with chone figgins
players like that dont win gg because it is given out one for each position, so he doesnt spend enough time at one position
