I think it was during the 80's and he might have played for the Mets. I remember hearing the rumor but can't remember who the player was. Allegedly he kept the pipe on him during games so no one would find it in his locker.

I remember that - it was Tim Raines who claimed to have learned the headfirst slide in order not to break his precious pipe.
