My friends had his appeal denied because his court appointed lawyer gave him his paper work late, What can we do?

Sue for malpractice.

Pretty much nothing. (except what Katt said above)

Once an appeal is denied for grounds like this, that's it.

The most recent precedent on the issue is that an appeal can be rejected for being filed late, even when it's the fault of the JUDGE at the trial court below. The filing deadline is absolute.
