I don't think we should remove the history itself, but to be real, the month is played out. Students, both black and white, dread the month because it's the same stuff all the time, even though there have been greater contributions made! I've actually had to teach a majority of information to my class because the curriculum of Black history in schools NEVER CHANGES! I think the month should be removed and the history, the REAL history, put in the textbooks instead of being set aside marked with "February".

Yes I agee we should do away with Black History MONTH, and incorporate black history throughout the entire history curriculum at the high school and colliegate level. To consolidate everything we've done for this country in twenty-eight days is a grave injustice towards those who have fought, struggled, created, educated, built and improved a country that hated them. Like it or not, this country was built on the backs of black people! Yeah sure we have Febuary to teach the contributions of the usual Harriett Tugman, Crispus Atticus, Martin Luther King Jr., George Washington Carver and so forth, their have been so many other African Americans that have done so much for this country and unfortunately, even black kids aren't taught this is in school. We have streets, cities and hollidays named after historic European figures that raped and murded people for their land, and were forced to hear of their "contributions" and "discoveries", yet kids never hear of the inventor of the elevator, open-heart surgury, toaster, refrigirator and so on. I only recently found out about these contributions by African Americans because some one on THIS site pointed them out to me, and I'm 31 years old. I'm not saying black history should be taught more than any other, but the contributions(real contributions and not criminal acts) should be intergrated throughout history lessons. Remember, it's IGNORANCE that breeds hatred, the more people learn about the actual conception and evolution of this country, the further we can go as a UNINTED society, not one that debates who's smarter or who did more.

Yes, b/c Black history month should not be just for one month, Black history should be every days. It not that we are making excuses, It's like asking the Jews to forget what happen to them. If you don't know your past u r sure to repeated it.To say that we should move on telling me that u not living in a real world. If anyone think that we should forget and not teach our kids about their history, they are the problems not us. Like the old saying "Teach one, Learn one," We can never go backward or not get to know our history b/c there are many of us black around the world that still don't know our history and u sound like one of them. After u read: Before the Mayflower; From Slavery To Freedom; Harriet Tubman and Roots to name a few books, then ask that question. Until today, we are still fighting for right to be free.

OMFG!!!!!!!!!
thank you...i didnt know that their were other people who felt the way i do about it...
black history month..just like slavery..needs to be abolished.
omg..so many thoughts pulsing through my head right now..
first of all...feburary should just be referred to as feburary not black history month. why is it that only in feburary that blacks become self aware of history and how sacred our roots are etc..etc...on those grounds alone the month long holiday should be abolished..and the sad part about it..on t.v when they're celebrating it..u always see concerts from stupid rap stars like ja rule(i like rap dont get me wrong) but we dont even honor it like we should! and its not fair that we have a month..it just makes us look bad infront of the other races..
second of all...it makes me sick..to know that in schools..thats when they start talking about black history..and its like..wait we never existed before?..ill admit..thats the only reason i can think of for having a black history month..or just wipe out the stupid holiday and just mix it in the curriculum..oops..did i just come up with a solution?..yes i did!
my point is..black history is just an excuse to promote laziness in the black community..ive seen a few instances where people didnt bother coming to work and listed their excuses as being black history month
another great example of another race being wronged is the native american..these people hardly exist anymore..but u dont see them complaining, they dont have a month..but ill tell u this...they got off their *** and now they're cashing out on casinos
black people need to accept that the past is the past and theres nothing u can do to change it but accept that ur powerless to it and put the best into the future and the present to insure it gets better for the next generation, thats what im doing

Consider this! I'd agree with getting rid of Black History month as soon as we can rid ourselves & our country of racism & discrimination.
By the way, what sort of "great start" are you referring to?? Great start of what? Incidently, Black History Month is hardly about anyone making excuses.... past or present, it's about awareness & celebration! Reflection, good & bad, promotes self- awareness, encourages understanding, & ultimately heals all wounds. THAT IS, UNTIL SOME BORED, HAVE NO LIFE HATRED-SPEWING SPHINCTER-MUSCLE LIKE YOU POSTS SOME RIDICULOUS RACIAL COMMENT TO ATTRACT EVERY HATER WITHIN A 1000 MILES TO SPEW MORE VENEM & IGNORANCE, WHICH IS THE VERY REASON THE CESS POOL CYCLE CONTINUES...
...it is time to move on, & it begins with the "man" in the mirror.

No, History should not be banished .It should be a reminder on how hatred causes people to do outlandish things to each other .
White`s would like that part of history erased ,but being white I think it should be a reminder to all about racial hatred .
The Holocaust is another example of horror man created against another human .

I think putting up a screen in court so we could have blind justice would work. They tried that for auditions in the worlds symphony orchestras and women members went from two to fifty percent. A few more years and maybe there won't be very many male musicians, if they don't pick up the pace. It shows how much effect prejudice does have, of course.

I don't know if getting rid of it will solve anything but when is it enough. We don't have American Indian month, or Chinese month. Every culture contributed to the formation, growth and fortunes in the USA, but we don't celebrate them. The Chinese were used to build the railways and were enslaved to but we don't give them a month. I think we should celebrate everyone. I am American Indian but I don't expect to get paid for something that happened to my grandfather or great grandfather. In fact I don't even use this status to get scholarshipsbecause I feel that there is someone out there that needs it more then me. I think we sould stop hiding behind the past and living in the past... but make our future better then thiers and celebrate what all the people before us did for us in order for us to be here today. I am sure that if anyone of us went back and talked to our ancesors that they would tell us to revenge them or hold on to something... Im sure they would tell you to pave your own way.
Again celebrate your family but make a future for yourself, stop living in the past.

black history month serves a purpose. in history black people's contributions have been ignored, both during slavery and after. black history month is a time to remember that many stories have been forgotten and many heros havn't had their songs sung due to the color of their skin.
that being said...
we also have a national straw-hat day.
not everyone takes observances that seriously, so don't worry about it.
let those who like BHM celebrate and let the straw-hat lovers have their day as well.

There should not be ANY racially tinged month period. No Hispanic Month, Black Month, or anything else. These groups are always clamoring for EQUAL treatment, yet insist on having "special" treatment because they are a minority.
Well this year I became a minority. Yep this year the middle class, those of us who do not accept hand outs from the government and bear the brunt of the taxation are less than 50% of the nations population, hence a minority!! SO WHERE IS MY SPECIAL MONTH? Oh, sorry I forgot, it's April..... tax month. Silly me!
