like ive given a lot of people my number so they can text me! is that a bad thing?

Yeah, for a couple of reasons.
1) Anybody can claim to be anything or anyone on the internet. Giving your cell number is not a safe thing to do.
2) Unless you have unlimited text messaging, it can cost you a small fortune

It all depends on your monthly plan. It might be a problem if they start texting you alot and make you pay the bill for all those texts.
