A 95 Cavalier doesn't use Freon. It uses R-134. You can just buy a can with a built in gauge to top it off. The amount of low side pressure is different for different ambient temperatures, so make sure the gauge accounts for that.

Good Question. Unfortunately, your car is now classified as an "older car", and older cars use something called R-12 in their A/C units to make the air cold.

R-12 is no longer being made, because it is a hydrocarbon, and bad for the environment. However, many repair shops still have stores of the stuff, and can recharge (refill) it for you.

Another option is to have you A/C unit converted to R-134a, (the new stuff). However, be careful about the conversion, doing it yourself with an over the counter kit may cost you more in the long run. There seems to be some issues with burning out your existing compressor with these kits.

In my opinion, in the old days, I would have said, do it yourself, but with an older car (unless you can find some R-12), leave it to the pros.

You'll first want to convert to the new freon 134a, the old freon r12 is $20 a can which you'll need several and a AC license to buy. So if you have another leak it will cost you $$$. I recommend having a tech install the kit that you need. Keep i mind that a ac system is a closed system so if your losing freon it's because of a leak. Also don't forget there is also an oil that you need to add for your compressor. Once that is done then you can buy 134a with a tube attached and screw it on the nipple that looks like a tire stem . Only connect to the low side of your system, if your not sure which is the low side they sell a pressure gauge that looks like a tire gauge. Installing on the high side can cause the can to explode which could cause serious injury or death. Also follow manufacture instructions.

Any auto parts store will sell an A/C recharge kit complete with gauges and leak detection light and glasses. The instructions are super easy! Not much more than putting air in your tires. The system is set up with 2 fittings for recharging. They are different sizes so you cant hook things up wrong. Check out your local Auto Zone, they will have everything you need.
