So one kid has been kidnapped and she's got a sweet face...big deal. There are thousands of kids who suffer each and every day at the hands of abusive parents, through disease and poor economic conditions in general, or simply because they were born in the wrong place at the wrong time. If a tenth of the money spent on the McCanns were spent on disadvantaged children, the effect would be positive and immediate and lives would be saved without the speculation of the outcome of a criminal investigation. Let's get a grip on things here, if the McCanns are worth an audience with the Pope, what about somebody representing the thousands and thousands of starving and abused kids in Africa.......or is it that a starving black kid doesn't look quite so cute on a poster ?

I apologise to you all for my lack of sensitivity when saying 'big deal' in relation to the missing child, but I tend to feel that when compared to the misery and sufferring of children throughout the world the publicity of the McCanns is seriously out of proportion.

I do not like the McCann’s and I believe they are bad parents and I've never been on the McCann’s oh poor them crusade. They must take some of the blame for leaving that child.

However am fed up with oh if this was a black kid, oh if this was a council estate kid. In all honesty does it bloody matter? I do not care about the colour of this child, I don't care about what sex the child is, I do not care what class this child comes from. I just care that this child has suffered or suffering at the hands of a monster.

Stop being so racially minded. I feel dreadful about what happens to any child in this world who faces whatever abuse by whatever adult. Yes I AGREE the money could be spent elsewhere to help so many other children but I get the feeling you do not care because she is white and cute which is just appalling.

On top of this I'm not even a parent but at least I care about the child rather than the colour of that child and I would feel the same if this was a black child. Shame on you!

The McCann;s are doing what they can for THEIR daughter. If you want a soapbox to save all the children of the world, then go for it. I applaud you. There are Save The Children societies, but you obviously feel very strongly about it all. Good to see some people have a conscience.
PS Princess Ann is the patron I believe. I'm sure they welcome donations.

pS A note to the person who said they couldn't afford babysitters. The McCann's have said the reason they didn't have a babysitter was that they didn't trust the service. It had nothing to do with money. I have since read two letters from people (one who was a babysitter) and both stated that the babysitting service in these complexes often consists of a person who comes around every now and again and listens at the door.

Whose time and money? Any time I spend thinking about it is time I choose to spend. The same goes for money. The fund is not public money - it is private donations that are given freely. If it were not being given to the Madeleine fund, there is no particular reason to think that it would be going to anywhere of which you would approve more.

As Roman Catholics, the McCanns are as entitled as any other members of that church to see the Pope at his weekly general audience. I find the harping on about this issue quite puzzling. The visit (THEY went to see HIM, not the other way round) attracted publicity, which is what they stated they intended to do, and they derived some solace from his attention and his prayers, as a faithul Roman Catholic naturally would. Get over it, please.

As for the race issue that you bring into it - I can tell you that I watched a news report about female genital mutilation last week and the fact that it was a little black African girl who was about to be held down to have her clitoris and labia sliced off by her close female relatives and neighbours in no way reduced the horror and distress I felt.

If you are so concerned about starving kids in Africa, why don't you make sure that you are doing all you can to improve that situation and get your friends to do the same.

And leave the McCanns alone.

Edit: Jack H, your extensive knowledge of the case has at least one chink in it. They most certainly did make an appeal for her return. A day or two after she had gone missing, Kate McCann made an appeal in both English and Portuguese asking for the return of their little girl and appealed to those holding her to put her in a safe place so that she could be returned.
If you got that wrong, what else in your catalogue of their "crimes" is incorrect?

What about people like the parents of Ben Neadham who went missing years ago

Also what about the soaps changing there story lines to prevent causing distress to the parents what about all the people who were distressed my the over exposure given to the McCanns who just seem to be milking the situation. lets face it if it was me I would not be in front of the camera I'd be out looking, asking, anything or bonding with their other children.

and why did they believe they children would be safe when they were so far away even if they saw something they could not have reached her in time and why only take one child unless you feel your family is big enough with a set of twins. Am I just being suspicious

I don't begrudge Madaline any attention that may get her back but I do begrudge the explitation the parents are encouraging and i hope that madaline is soon found but I fear she wont be alive

Oh look. there's a extensive quantity of money over there if we are saying "blah blah blah". we could bypass over there and say "blah blah blah" or we could get a job the place we'd desire to artwork and are paid on our overall performance. The fund is being milked by cheats and liars. (it is not condemnation of the McCanns. they're an wealthy midsection-type couple who used the media to spotlight and bring up money to look into the kidnapping of their newborn. Any discern might do their appropriate to recuperate a misplaced newborn. yet whilst there's a extensive pile of money up for grabs, it attracts the grasping, no longer unavoidably the worth and the effective.)

I know what you are saying, and although I wouldn't put it so harshly I do kind of agree with you. However, lets spare a thought for Madeleine. She is missing through no fault of her own and she is the only suffering victim in this case. I agree, all children should be given the same amount of press and help, but unfortunately most other cases are not exploited as much as this one.

You have a valid point - but the way you've worded it is terrible. Who on earth would say 'big deal' in relation to a child of 3/4 years old being abducted and possibly murdered. This is an innocent child that we are talking about - I find it hard to believe that anyone can begrudge her personally the media attention - regardless of what you think of her parents.
As for your comments about children abused by their parents and starving children in Africa and the like - do you actually do anything to help these children? There are numerous organisations set up to try and make a difference to these children.
Every child on this planet, regardless of race, sex or appearance is as important as the next child. Madeline's disappearance has created a lot of media attention - partly because of her parents campaigning - partly because of her beautiful little face.
If anyone is 'to blame' over Madeline's face being all over the place, it is the press who have pushed her case into the limelight. It is not Madeline's fault that other children are being ignored - so why begrudge her the attention?

i think you have a point i returned from holiday a few weeks ago and small children were begging and homeless
i thought of madeline and wondered who gave a dam for the street children
the children were white by the way , this is more of a class issue than a colour issue

they are all equal and should be treated equally

Bob Geldorf tried that!
An old Jewish saying is 'If you save one life, you save the world'
Africa is ongoing.
Like me, you do something.

We realised a balloon some time ago (from England) and it went all the way to North Africa.
It was a school project and the recipient wrote a letter back that they had found it! That was quite amazing, so things can work. Never rule anything out, unless you wnt to.

Agreed. And if the McCanns had enough money to feed all the media exposure, the why couldn't they afford a babysitter?
