is there a manual priming lever to pressurise the system?

These can leak air into the system when you use them (the O ring gets unsettled and air gets past it)

You can bypass the primer by using a length of fuel pipe and some brass connectors.....go from the tank feed straight to the first fuel filter but first back fill the pipe with diesel using a small funnel then connect it to the filter.

What air there is in the system after that will be naturally bled out. ( if not just undo the last injector nut slightly and let the air out when shes running.)

a good test is to run a fuel line from a Jerry can to the fuel pump on the engine...if it runs fine then the problem is air getting in before the pump.

If your fuel system keeps taking air the you have a leak on the suction side of the pump. Between the tank and the pump. Start with the suction tube in the tank and examine lines and fittings forward to the pump. Especially look for wet areas although if the hole is small enough air will go in where fuel won't come out. If the fuel filters are on the suction side of the pump they may not have air in them but could be the source of the problem-O rings, gaskets. Luck

obviously there is a leak in the system, I would fill it with fuel, let it sit in the sun (get the fuel hot), and watch to see where it leaks from as the pressure builds. This is dangerous, be very careful not to forget about it.... and to release any pressure build up before starting the engine.

Yes, you may have to seal off the fuel cap, a baggie and rubber band will do it.

did you replace your pickup tube before the lift pump? sometimes they develop a crack and will suck air there, not allowing proper fuel pressure... or sometimes they swell almost shut. try replacing the pickup tube with a slightly larger new one.

Do you have a float bowl on the tractor? if so the pin is stuck in the bowl. Take the bowl apart and get a new float pin from the local tractor supply and replace it. Once they start sticking there isnt much you can do to fix it.
