Why have they set it up as a business instead of a charity? I have my views but was wondering if anyone can think of a genuine reason that the Mccanns would do this. Charitable donations are tax exempt aren't they? Why would you not take advantage of this? And where is the money going to?

"What we have here, is a failure to communicate."

That was one of my favorite lines from the movie "Cool Hand Luke" starring Paul Newman. It also succinctly describes the PR problem with the "No Stone Unturned" campaign being run by Gerry McCann.

On one side there is the highly successful fund raising campaign approaching 1 million. On the other side is the website full of useless information.

All Team McCann needs to do is take their plans (current and future) and start sharing them with the public. It would be nice to know where they plan on spending the money.

Raising money is not the goal; spending the money on finding Maddy is the goal!

How did that message get lost?

Charities are subject to strict rules on what revenue can be spent on. In the case of a limited company, it's simply up to the directors and shareholders. For instance, a charity that was set up to look for a missing child would have to answer some very serious questions from The Charity Commission if most of its revenue was spent on lawyers, spin doctors, and luxury accommodation for the family of the missing child, but not a single penny on investigators to look for the child.

http://forums.mirror.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=2660 some food for thought there!

My opinion is that theyve been very clever..or tried to be. If it was a Charity, they would have to account for where the money was going. But the plus side of it being given Charity status, is that it would be tax exempt.

By launching the fund as a Limited company, the money is theres to do whatever they want with..the accounts dont have to be made public untill 2009. So they launch it as a business, THEN apply to be tax exempt too! Crafty! Except they were refused tax exemption...bit of a blow to their plans!

he's doing a variety of issues: one million) attempting to convince the McCanns how stupid they have been to enable the media arise with this, consequently making him appear as if a fool; 2) attempting to think of up a stable excuse for what the McCanns did; or 3) waiting for his next cost earlier doing something. clever.

Well from where I am the money seems to be lining their own pockets. I mean after all who is paying for their expensive never ending holidays with all the luxury meals and all the different things they are doing. Nothing comes cheap nowadays and if it was me doing all the things they are doing I would run up a massive bill, but none of this is happening to them. And there is no holes forming in their pockets either. I think that explains a lot.

A very good question Abi! If they are not a charity, as I understand it, the money does NOT have to be accounted for as being spent on charity. The money could be spent by the board on anything they think fit, Travel etc. But I may be wrong but I am sure there are many on here who are experienced in business who will answer this for you.

I think they have said that any money left over when Madeleine is found safe and well will be put out to other charities for missing children. What will happen to the money if, God forbid, the little one is NOT found safe and well is anyone's guess. My only concern is that this couple should be taken to task for leaving their children alone at night while they pursued their own holiday pleasures, which had NOTHING AT ALL to do with FAMILY!

well so far I believe it's been spent on:

-The McCann's staff (lawyers, PR etc)
-The Balloons
-The bracelets or something which they are selling for more money
-The McCann's round the world tour meeting the pope and alike
-Not sure if they have yet, but they have looked at villa's abroad, but they'll probably use the money for that

and they'll probably spend it on anything else they need, hotel's, room service, new cars if it takes their fancy.

Personally I think the way they are doing things is discusting, it's their own fault their daughter is missing, and if they were really that concerned we would have seen them LOOKING for their daughter.

Hi Abi! I believe the fund is not being used as a "business" but as it was rejected as a "Chartity" the McCanns had no option but to set it up as Co. I believe that it is being put to good use for the hire of good Private Investigators, details of which we are clueness, as this needs to be PRIVATE!
I also believe that once Madeleine is found this fund will be used for the cause of other missing children.
