If she's getting into college, get her XP-- don't listen to Dell. Vista has a lot of unnecessary security measures that will only confuse her and will take a lot of time to learn how to turn off. Vista's just generally less user-friendly than XP. I'm running on XP right now, and with some free spyware protection and free anti-virus software, I haven't had a single security issue, so... honestly, Vista isn't worth the hassle.

I thinkMicrosoft Windows Vista is better. I know how to install programs made for Windows XP to Windows Vista just insert the CD your installing from than right click the setup program like setup.exe then click properties then Compatibility then check the "Run this program in compatibility mode for" then choose "Windows XP Service Pack 2",Then OK and launch it again and it shout work.
NOTE:not all setup programs work in this way like the one i did with my wifi usb adapter. So you get the features of XP plus more with Vista. So i recomend getting vista i can even play halo 1 and 2 on vista.

Vista has a lot of compatibility issues. Many business software run onto XP cannot be run yet with Vista. It is wise to wait until Microsoft fixes all compatibility issues on vista. I just bought a laptop with vista and I am trying to go back to XP.

I just got a new computer with Vista pre-installed, and I am getting used to the navigation and stuff just fine, but right now I still have 2-3 instances per day of the drivers failing on me .. sometimes even the OS fails for no apparent reason.

For that, and that alone, I would say go with XP. Vista may be faster and better eventually, but right now it is just buggy. In fact, right I call it Windows ME v.2.0. For those of you who don't remember, Windows ME came out after Windows2000 and before XP and was a complete failure.

lets say vista is better because its state of the art system but windows xp is really ok enough since there are still some compatability issues in vista, but for me both are ok if you are gonna use it for not so complicated tasks. What i like in vista (currently using vista ultimate 32-bit OS) is the security, which you daughter might need since viruses and other things can be messy with the files in your daughers pc.

If Vista is already installed on the new Dell, you can order the XP Recovery CD from them. Then, she can use the one she likes / needs for school.

if you have a lot of programs to install exspecially video and games that were bult while xp was out i would get xp but if you do not have much current software and get vista cappable software vista is the way to go. I have not had one problem with Vista with vista programs installed only with xp programs. Or do what i did and get xp and vista to dual boot.
