The Microbiological Research and Services Laboratory-Culture Collection of the UP-Natural Science Research Institute (UP-NSRI) evolved from a small collection of microorganisms of the late Dr. Flordeliz R. Uyenco which started in 1965 at the Department of Botany, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines-Diliman (UPD). The microbial collection was primarily used for instruction. In 1971, the UP-NSRI Culture Collection or UPCC was formally organized through a research grant from the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP), entitled “Studies in Culture of Microorganisms Important to Environmental and Industrial Research.” The project aimed to isolate and maintain live cultures of microorganisms that may be useful for industrial and ecological studies.
