You don't live in a democracy and never have. You live in a democratic republic and that is quite different. Democracy is chaos. Nietzsche said "Blessed in Chaos, for out of Chaos comes order." So order is the next step.

According to Plato, oligachy is a step up - yes, an improvement - from democracy. Tyranny being the worst form of government of all, Plato looks most favorably upon a form of government in which philosopher-kings are in power. This, he believed, was most likely to achieve good government untainted by passions or whims.

The way we're headed, the next step will be dictatorship, of the socialist variety. They'll be doing it for our own good, don't you know?

Chaos, probably. True democracies are hard to find, and harder yet to sustain... They usually fall apart because someone reverts to greed...
