Bought a bed set but even after my first wash the comforter and sheets are still somewhat scratchy. Would a fabric softener work? What's the best way to soften them, can I even?

yes... wash with just a little soap and then liquid fabric softener. Put in dryer- I use those dryer balls and they make everything nice and fluffy- But I understand that tennis balls do the same thing. Don't worry- they'll be comfy soft after another wash or two!

This is probably more about your thread count than it is a laundry issue. If your sheets have a thread count under 300, they aren't going to get better. Spend a little more and get the higher count.
