most services need a BT line going into the house/flat and if you live along way from an exchange the service can be very erratic.
ntl/virgin use cable and ive just got a 20mb service which is so fast it's mad.
SKY is a joke you need a BT line (which is still copper wire years old)to send and a sky dish to receive.so if its raining or you have a storm it becomes very unstable.and the download limits are very sad.
most other services depend on a BT line so do some research on where you are moving too.
good luck

EDIT read the small print in any AOL service.it will scare the pants off you

BT is far the best as they have a long established client base and have been around since the phone came to Britain. Also they provide a service which is so far unmatched by any company I've been with. But they entered the Inrternet market late and have been playing catch up for years but the service is undeniable. The connection is constant (no drop outs) and they will inform you of any upgrade work by letter or e-mail before hand. However they only provide a maximum of 8Mb/s download speed at the moment. I have not had a serious problem with them, but they do have their limits and so are not completely perfect.
There are other providers but BT is the best to go for as they have a suitable price plan and package for everyone. And they like loyalty. Think first what you need in terms of an Internet package and then decide.
If you're into heavy downloads and multi media then
Be Broadband is the fastest at up to 24Mb/s download followed by Sky Broadband at up to 16Mb/s with BT and others following at half that speed.
You can get broadband service from mobile phone comapnies here but they use BT lines and therefore aren't as reliable.
Weigh your options then decide before moving to the UK.
P.S Since Sky Broadband is provided by the same who provide cable TV in the UK you might want to consider getting both the TV and Broadband packages together and save the extra paperwork of having a seperate phone service. But depending on where you decide to live there might be no option but to have a seperate service for Internet services.

Im inclined to agree with Blondy for cheapness. Ive just gone over from BT with whom Ive had no problems for the past 2 years. Although my TalkTalk is up and running now . They`ve kept me waiting since 31 March. I do live in a rural area and I know they had to install new equipment at the local telephone exchange. At the moment its so much faster than Ive ever had. As she says approx £20 that includes line rental all calls and free Broadband. For another £1 free international calls thrown in.

I have been with AOL for some years now, they are a bit expensive but I have never have a problem with my connection.
Compare this to people with Tiscali or a few other who are forever moaning about poor speeds or dropped connections.
BT are doing well these days and alot of people are picking one of their options.
Location can also make a difference, when you move in ask neighbours who they use.

Good luck
