The detail of his stories gives me the shivers. He plays up the worst things in humans, so his stories have a hint of truth even though they are fictional. He's not afraid to push the envelope and take his stories to that next level of evil and disgust. Not all his books are down right scary, but the detail keeps you in suspense and keeps your imagination on overdrive. Maybe that's what makes his books so intense, he's able to tap into your imagination so your own mind makes the horror more real.
Try Black House (which is a collaboration between Stephen Kind and Peter Straub) and/or Cell. Both are good and have gory details.

It, The Shining and Needful Things were all good and ones you could start with. If you're looking for a shorter novel, Carrie and Firestarter were both excellent.
King just has a way of writing things. He sets up a scene VERY well and keeps the suspense going strong. He's a brilliant writer, although he went through a period of some pretty odd writing.
I find that my imagination works in overdrive while reading his books. I can't read them at night because I start freaking out that something might be under my bed. Haha! I know, it's silly... but he's just that good!
Oh and another really good one is Delores Claiborne.

King knows how to detail a situation to setup the scare. The Shining is a scary book but so is one of his newer ones Cell. He writes about things that will scare the heck out of you. The Stand is spooky also. Its a tale about good versus evil.

for my section, King's scariest artwork has a tendency to be his short memories, the evening Shift is a huge place to start up. in case you in basic terms would desire to have a singular, the Shining is perchance a thank you to bypass. rather some his novels tend to be needlessly long winded for my section. besides the undeniable fact that in case you incredibly, extremely want a frightening e book, i'd seem to Clive Barker and his collections of short memories popular because of the fact the Books of Blood. a great novel of his is The Damnation pastime.

King's books just tickle your imagination and make it see the scariest ghosts behind ordinary, quite, lovely, routinely life. It does stir your worse fears up- both rational ( like in "the Stand" which is post-apocalyptic) and of course irrational ( Salem's Lot, IT).
But not all of his books are great- I was disappointed by Cujo, for example.

I like The Shining by Stephen King.
It is quite scary XD
Try it, you might like it.
I think the way he writes, like his descriptions of what is happening is very well-written and does make it more scary!!

yepp, the description...
the scary behind the normal, you know. things that became totally different at once.
try the Shining, and it; pet cemetary and cujo were not bad either.
you should also try something by Clive Barker, but he's very explicit - adult stuff, in parts.

You are right, it is the way he sets up the situation. His descriptions makes the reader feel as if he/she are there. Enjoy, but leave a light on!
